WOW!!! The number of votes we received in our Facebook group for this week’s virtual camp theme was freaking incredible!!! Y’all need to go join our Facebook group and follow us on Pinterest, if you haven’t yet! I’m so excited to partner with Hannah from Inspired Sparks (go follow her on YouTube here!) to bring you FREE cooking classes for kids! Below is an outline of what we will be cooking each day, along with a list of ingredients and supplies. There is a master list of everything at the very bottom of the page, but the details are helpful to read first. I tried to give various substitutions (and Amazon links), since getting to the grocery can be a bit of a challenge. Drop a comment below or in our Facebook group if you have questions about any ingredients or other ideas for substitutions!

cooking class for kids - virtual camp ingredient list for our awesome week of kids cooking classes!

Day 1 – Easy Tortilla Pizza

This is literally a staple in our house, especially during COVID! The kids stay busy making these personal pizzas that they LOVE to eat, while giving me a break from cooking dinner! HUGE win for all of us!!!

Tortilla Pizza Ingredients:

  • flour tortillas (My kids prefer size small or medium, like these, but use what you prefer!)
  • pizza sauce
  • mozzarella cheese
  • OPTIONAL: pizza toppings (mushrooms, olives, pepperoni, etc.)

Day 2 – Brigadeiro Chocolate Truffles

We learned in our virtual camp’s “world travel tour” about the delicious chocolate truffles (called Brigadeiro) that people make in Brazil! Now it is time to learn how to make them in our cooking class for kids!

Chocolate Truffle Ingredients:

  • 2 TB butter
  • 2 cans sweetened condensed milk (NOT evaporated milk!)
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder (this chocolate malt Ovaltine is the most authentic for how they taste in Brazil!)
  • chocolate sprinkles, rainbow sprinkles, coconut flakes or your favorite “topping” to roll chocolate fudge balls in!

Day 3 – Edible Slime (5 Different Ways!!!)

Edible Slime Ingredients:

  • marshmallows
  • peanut butter (or Sun Butter if you have nut allergies, like two of my kids!)
  • Starbursts
  • powdered sugar
  • Jello (in your favorite color! Sugar-free is less sticky, but any will work!)
  • corn starch

Day 4 – Bread (Challah) in a Bag

This foolproof recipe is SUPER fun for kids to make and comes out perfect for my kids EVERY. SINGLE. TIME!

Bread in a Bag Ingredients:

  • Ziploc bag (gallon size)
  • 1 TB active dry yeast
  • 3 TB white sugar
  • 1/2 TB salt
  • 1/3 cup canola oil
  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • OPTIONAL add-ins: sesame seeds, everything but the bagel seasoning, chocolate chips and cinnamon sugar are some of our favorites!

Day 5 – 4th of July Cheesecake Parfait

Y’all know we wouldn’t forget about the 4th of July!!! We will make a patriotic cheesecake parfait that is impressive looking, but super easy for kids to do!

Patriotic Cheesecake Parfait Ingredients:

  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • 1.5 cups milk
  • vanilla instant pudding (can also use white chocolate, banana, cheesecake or other light colored pudding flavors, if you prefer!)
  • Cool Whip whipped topping (thaw this out in the fridge!)
  • vanilla wafers
  • blueberries
  • strawberries
  • parfait glasses (or clear plastic cups)

Kid-Friendly Kitchen Utensils

Lots of you have asked me about how to get kids involved in the kitchen while being safe. Here are some of my favorite kid-friendly kitchen utensils. My kids started cooking in the kitchen as soon as they could hold a spoon, and we always have so much fun! Start them young, friends… but fear not, if your kids are older, it is never too late to begin!

1. Kids Plastic Knives

I love these plastic kids knives, especially for younger kids. They are surprisingly good at cutting through most vegetables, fruits and other ingredients, while minimizing the risk involved with using metal knives made for adults.

2. Kinder Metal Knives

If you feel like your kids are ready for metal knives, I absolutely adore these Kuhn Rikon kinder metal knives. They are made specifically for kids, so are perfectly sizes for little hands. Plus, how adorable are they?!

3. Kids Spatula, Brush & Whisk Set

If you have a spatula and kitchen brush (for “painting” your egg wash on your bread), then your kids can probably use yours. However, your kids will love having their own spatula, brush and rainbow whisk. I love how this set is made out of silicone and good quality materials, as opposed to some of the other kids sets on the market.

4. Piranha Pizza Wheel

How fun are these Boston Warehouse kitchen utensils for kids?!? I especially adore the piranha pizza wheel and the monkey vegetable peeler!

5. Curious Chef

If you want to really go all out, Curious Chef has a fantastic line of kids cooking tools. They have everything from aprons and kid-sized oven mitts to an entire cooking caddy FULL of everything a kid could ever need in the kitchen!
