Learning how to type is such an important skill, now perhaps more than ever! In our Facebook Group (which you MUST join if you haven’t!!!) we are asked on a daily basis for the best, free typing games for kids. So, we have put together this awesome list with all of our favorite typing lessons for kids, as well as the most popular suggestions from other parents in the group! The list is broken into two parts: free typing lessons for kids and free typing games for kids. Typing lessons are more structured ways to learn how to type, whereas games are a fun way to practice typing skills.

Here are some of our favorite typing lessons for kids to learn how to type in a structured way.

1. Typing.com

There is an extensive keyboarding curriculum that includes comprehensive keyboarding skills on Typing.com. However, it goes even further to also include the following building blocks, as well as many other components!

  • Coding fundamentals
  • Career prep and professionalism

2. Typing Club

You can learn touch typing for free on Typing Club’s website! It claims to be “the most effective way to learn how to type.” Even if you only practice for a few minutes every day, you will notice a huge improvement in just a week or two!

3. Dance Mat Typing

The BBC has a fantastic, free typing program for kids that is called Dance Mat Typing. There are a total of four levels and each one is divided into three stages. You begin by learning the home row keys and then build up from there. Each level keeps reviewing the previous material, as you learn more. Visit Dance Mat Typing here.

Here is a list of fun ways to practice typing skills through free typing games for kids!

1. Keyboard Ninja

This is a free typing game from Typing.com where you can pick rows (or all of the letters!) to be tested on. A piece of fruit is shown on the screen with a letter. If you type the right character, then the ninja chops the fruit in half. Otherwise, you lose a point. Lose three times and it is game over! Play Keyboard Ninja here.

2. Nitro Type

Kids LOVE playing Nitro Type because you can even play against your friends! The game is a car race with up to 5 players around the world, all competing for who can type the fastest. You can even earn cool cars and other prizes in the game! Click here to play Nitro Type.

3. Typing Tycoon

This fun, free typing game for kids lets you earn virtual dollars by typing correctly without a mistake. You can use the money you earn to buy cute animals that have special abilities in the game. Click here to play Typing Tycoon.

4. Keyboarding Zoo

This typing game is perfect for early elementary age students to learn how to type on the keyboard. Keyboarding Zoo is created by ABCya, which is a fun educational resource for younger kids. Click here to play Keyboarding Zoo.

5. Typing.com Games

There are quite a few fantastic typing games for kids on Typing.com In addition to Nitro Type and Keyboard Ninjas (both mentioned above) here is the full list of choices!

6. The Typing of the Ghosts Game

Perfect for Halloween or ghost lovers! The Typing of the Ghosts is a game where kids have to type full words (or number sequences) as quickly as possible before the ghosts grow too large! If you type the word correctly, without any mistakes, the ghost is killed. Otherwise, you have to hurry and do it again before the ghosts grow out of control! 7. Alpha Munchies Typing Game

ABCya’s Alpha Munchies is another fun typing game for elementary students. Kids have to type letters to stop critters from munching on all of the food. There are several levels and letter rows to select from. Click here to play Alpha Munchies!

8. Type-a-Balloon Game

Another fun typing game for kids from Typing.com is Type-a-Balloon! You have to type the letters that are written on balloons as quickly as possible before they float to the top of the screen.
